Mass Effect 2 Journal: Day One

I've decided to keep a running journal of my thoughts as I play through Mass Effect 2 this weekend, and update it daily.

** Warning! Major plot spoilers. Recommended only for people that have already completed Mass Effect 2. **

0750 - Oh great. Normandy's engineers are Scottish. This can't end well.

0810 - Not messing with the sidequests yet, going straight to Cloud City…err…Omega.

0824 - So this is way in the future, right? Why does the music in The Afterlife bar sound like it was made in 1992?

0831 - Holy god, I am the worst dancer in the galaxy. Would I be a better dancer if I wasn't white?

0858 - Oh crap, I hit RT and did some sort of bad-guy move. I didn't mean to do that. I'm such a jerk. I'm trying to be Paragon for this playthrough.

0902 - Let's see a show of hands, how many people were surprised when Archangel turned out to be Garrus? Anybody?

0912 - Taking a breakfast break. Leggo my Eggos!

0946 - Back in the thick of it, just saved Garrus from some dumb gunship. Playing the game on normal difficulty, I've already died a couple times. They don't mess around with this cover system.

0957 - Ooh. I feel the makings of a love story here. I'm looking at you, Kelly.

1032 - Damnit, I died and there wasn't an autosave nearby. Gotta replay about 20 minutes of game I've already seen. Sucks.

1328 - Took a lunch break. I think I've done everything I can in this system, time to move on a bit. Going to recruit the convict.

1403 - I don't like this Jack character. Very cliche. Where did they pick her up, Seattle? And who cuts all those patterns into the hair on the back of her head?

1415 - It's funny, the extra effort to make this game feel more like an action game make the non-action sequences (running around, talking to people) seem that much slower. And a little boring, honestly.

1431 - Just launched 23 probes onto one planet and depleted every element it had. FROM ORBIT. Take that, Al Gore!

1507 - Just spent 45 minutes launching probes on planets. I can't shake the feeling that I could be doing more with my life right now. Going after the krogan.

1650 - Took a break to boil some ribs and to get rice ready. Back in the fight to recruit the krogan. I have exactly 43,000 gamerpoints right now. I don't want to get another achievement, it'll mess it up. Just kidding. I'm going straight for that shit.

1651 - Apparently I can't load a save game without being connected to Xbox Live. Why?

1658 - I'm finding myself extremely low on ammo all the time.

1929 - Back from dinner and a couple of episodes of The Office. Going to open this Krogan's cryogenic container and see what all the fuss is about.

2008 - Just killed me my first collector. Their shields are super annoying. Reminds me of Halo.

2014 - Hmm. These new husks are more advanced and evolved than in the first game, you say? Maybe because this is a sequel and that's an unspoken requirement?

2053 - Oh my god, how many times to I have to replay this boss fight? This is annoying. It wouldn't be so annoying if it wasn't for these loooong load times.

2101 - Damnit, I forgot that in ME1, I had let Kaiden live and not the Marine chick. That was a bad call. This guy is annoying.

2104 - Well, at least Kaiden isn't joining my group.

2130 - I find myself involved in conversations I don't really care to be involved in, just for some Paragon points or possible achievements down the road. I wonder how sloppy I'd be if I didn't care.

2135 - It feels really comforting to be using the character I imported from ME1. It definitely makes this game feel like a true sequel.

2223 - Playing around by traveling through the galaxy, and I had to insert disc two. I can't be halfway through the game already, right?

2312 - Okay, I'm calling it a night. A little under 14 hours of play (but that includes long pauses to take care of my son) in one day. Not bad, eh? Tomorrow I plan on doing all the team-related sidequests and getting it on with on of my teammates. Still deciding who that will be.
