You only got two months left to play Teh Haloez 2 online

My former best friend in the whole wide world, Major Nelson, just announced that they're discontinuing OG Xbox Live support on April 15th. I'm not terribly conerned about this, considering the fact that I haven't played any old Xbox games online since, well, Halo 3 came out, but I'm sure there are still some people out there that would like to continue to play Halo 2, Counter-strike, and Star Wars: Battlefront II a little more.

What's interesting is Microsoft's reasoning:

"While I can’t comment on the specifics, this change will allow us to continue evolving the LIVE service with new features and experiences that fully harness the power of Xbox 360 and the Xbox LIVE community."

What exactly does that mean? That the old Xbox was holding us back? Unlikely.

That sucks. I occasionally go back and play Halo 2 for the memories. I don't understand how cutting the original Xbox Support on LIVE will do anything for us now.

It's probably an effort to save some cash. Running those servers are expensive, and there can't be that many people still playing it as their primary game. It is surprising news, though.
